Essex Shipbuilding Museum 2016 Opening April 2

It’s that time of year again, the Essex Shipbuilding Museum begins its 2016 season this Saturday. It still a little chilly in the shipyard, but at least we don’t have snow and ice in the yard like last year. As always, we will be open on weekends during the spring from 10-5. The guided tours, including the ship model collection at the Schoolhouse, happen 3 times a day at 10:30, 1 and 3, but self tours of the shipyard are available all day long.  Our newly refurbished signage for the EVELINA M. GOULART will be installed shortly and our gift shop has both new items and some of your old favorites. So come by this weekend, either for a tour, or maybe just a cup of our great coffee. Hope to see you in the shipyard in 2016!

Maritime Capsules: Wednesday August 6, 7:30 PM Essex Shipbuilding Museum

I’m very proud to have been part of this excellent documentary team along with Keith Palazzola, Sal Zerilli, Mat Bradley and Jimmy Tarantino. A short, but detailed look at Gloucester’s relationship with the Grand Banks Dory in the past, present and future:

Why do working class people work so hard to sustain ways of life tied to declining commercial industries? The documentary film “Maritime Capsules” addresses this question through the eyes of a small group of people working to maintain an ancient rowboat as a vital piece of Maritime Culture in the shadows of the declining commercial fishing industry in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the oldest seaport in America.
